Eating Out Ain't Worth It!



So, I went to Panera Bread for lunch with a friend. I know a lot of people think Panera is healthy, right? Salads, soups, veggies on the sandwiches, what could be healthier? It's better than a Big Mac, isn't it? Wake up and smell the hidden calories and fat. My friend thought she was making a healthy choice by ordering a Tomato and Mozzarella Panini but reality hit when she went home and looked at the numbers. Check out these stats:

Tomato & Mozzarella on Ciabatta [12 oz] 780 cal/30g fat/7g fiber/99g carbs/30g protein/1290mg sodium

Big Mac [7.8 oz] 560 cal/30 g fat/3 g fiber/47 g carbs


So, let's look at another favorite restaurant of mine - First Watch. I LOVE it! Is it healthy, not really. There are some healthier options, but how many of us really choose those? Okay, I do, sort of. I choose the Tri-Athlete Omelette so then, I can have 1/2 of a pancake. Give and take, that's what it's all about. Check out the healthier side of First Watch:

Siesta Key Cocktail 470 cal/16 g fat/5 g fiber/72 g carbs
Lean Machine 460 cal/17 g fat/2 g fiber/30 g carbs
Power Wrap 490 cal/11 g fat/4 g fiber/58 g carbs
Tri-Athlete Omelette 290 cal/1.5 g fat/5 g fiber/44 g carbs
Fresh Fruit Crepes 640 cal/13 g fat/10 g fiber/119 g carbs
Cranberry Nut Oatmeal 740 cal/27 g fat/10 g fiber/117 g carbs
Fruit Bowl 210 cal/1.5 g fat/6 g fiber/51 g carbs

See what I mean, some are still fairly high in calories and fat. Look at that oatmeal for pete's sake! We have to be vigilant about caloric intake when we are wanting to lose weight.

In order for my friend to burn off the calories from the Panini she could do:


216 mins of walking
89 mins of jogging
65 mins of swimming
119 mins of cycling

Is eating out worth it? Not always, but sometimes it is. We just have to be wise and check ahead. I go to www.dwlz.com and decide what I'm going to eat ahead of time. I try to stay focused and not make rash choices when I'm in starvation mode.

So, how many calories were in your last fast food meal? How many minutes of walking will it take to burn them off? How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop; the world many never know:)

Yeah I have to budget for those calories, otherwise I end up way over my limit. I do the same thing with wine, and yes it's worth eating fewer calories so I can drink a few calories :-)

I'm pretty sure it's 3! (licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop)

Panera Bread is one of my "healthy" lunch choices...time to check out the numbers and see if that holds up. I'll let you know how my Creamy Tomato Soup & Iced Chai turn out! (Wanna make a guess?)
